Barbecubes is a dexterity game that takes about as long as it takes to cook a snag. Draw a card, pick up the matching bit of food with the tongs, and place it on the grill without dropping anything. Simple. Right up until your hand starts shaking and there are four blokes at the table telling you exactly how to do it.

Drop something and you lose a life, and the food. Turn over an action card and you might find yourself stacking with your non-dominant hand, which is where the whole thing falls apart in the best possible way.

The genius of it is the tin. Everything packs back into a container that fits in a glovebox, a handbag or a caravan drawer, so this is the game that comes camping, goes to the pub, gets played at the campsite table after dinner and comes out again while you're waiting for a meal. A round runs three to fifteen minutes, which means it fits into the gaps in a day rather than needing an evening cleared for it.

It's the follow-up to Tinderblox, and if you've played that you already know the drill. If you haven't, it makes no difference. You'll have the rules sorted in about ninety seconds.

Do I need to have played Tinderblox first?
Not at all. Barbecubes is the sequel but it stands completely on its own with its own components and rules. If you already own Tinderblox you'll pick this up instantly, and plenty of people own both because the themes play differently.

Is it really only three to fifteen minutes?
Yes, and that's the appeal. A two-player round is quick, six players takes longer, and most groups immediately play again. It's the sort of game that gets three rounds in before anyone notices.

Is it too hard for an 8 year old?
Eight is a fair starting age. Younger kids can absolutely join in with a bit of help, and the honest truth is that steady hands beat experience here, so children often do better than the adults. If you're playing with someone much younger, drop the action cards for the first few rounds.

Does everything fit back in the tin?
It does, and it's designed to. That's what makes it a genuine travel game rather than a box you have to wrestle shut. Worth a quick count of the food pieces before you close the lid.

Is it fun for adults, or is it a kids' game?
It's marketed at families but it plays brilliantly with adults, especially with a drink in hand. The tension of placing one more piece while everyone watches is the whole game, and that lands harder the older you are.
