This is one of those toys that doesn't do anything, which is exactly why it works.
There's no button, no sound, no single correct way to use it. It's a wooden fence that folds out to 168cm, and what happens next is entirely up to whoever's playing with it. It becomes a paddock for the horses. Then a pen for the sheep, because the horses have escaped. Then a road for the tractor. How long is it, really?
168cm fully extended, which is a decent stretch of paddock. Because it folds concertina style you can also set it up much shorter, so it works just as well on a small table as it does across a play mat.
Are animals or tractors included?
No, the fence is sold on its own. It's designed to work alongside whatever farm animals, figurines and vehicles you already have, and it pairs beautifully with most standard wooden and plastic farm sets.
Can I really paint it?
Yes, and it's one of the nicest things about it. The timber is unpainted and sanded smooth, so it takes paint well. Use a non-toxic children's paint or a water-based acrylic, and let it dry properly before it goes back into play.
Will it stand up on its own?
It does, particularly when you zigzag it slightly rather than pulling it dead straight. That's the trick with concertina fences, and children work it out within about a minute.
Is it suitable for a 3 year old?
Yes, three is the recommended starting age. The timber is smooth and there's nothing small to lose, which makes it one of the easier wooden toys for that age group.
Can I buy more than one?
You can, and plenty of people do. They join end to end, so two sets give you well over three metres to work with, which is enough for separate paddocks, a laneway and a yard.
How do I store it?
It folds flat, so it slides behind a bookshelf, under a bed or into a toy box without taking up any real room. That alone puts it ahead of most farm play sets.
