Product Info (That's Actually Helpful)...

There is no dignified way to lose a memory game to a five year old, and you will.

Children are genuinely better at this than adults, which is one of the small pleasures of playing it. Thirty pairs face down on the table, you flip two at a time, and whoever remembers where the second magpie is wins. It's the simplest game in the world and it has been beating grown-ups for generations.

The Aussie twist is what makes this one ours. Koalas, cheeky magpies, crocs, thongs and a good run of other Australian favourites, all illustrated by Grace Leong, a designer with a background in hand-drawn animation. They're colourful and full of character, so there's plenty to talk about as the pairs turn up. Good for naming things too, if you've got a little one still learning what a magpie is.

The cards are thick and easy to grip, which is the practical bit. Small hands can turn them without bending the corners, and a set that gets played weekly still looks good a year later.

Sixty cards in a compact box makes it one of the better things to throw in the caravan or the holiday bag. It needs no setup, no reading, and it works on a camp table just as well as the lounge room floor.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play?
Spread all 60 cards face down, then take turns flipping two. If they match, you keep the pair and go again. If they don't, flip them back and try to remember where they were. Most pairs at the end wins. That's the whole game.

What age is it good for?
It works from about three with a reduced number of pairs, and from four or five with the full set. No reading is required, which is why memory games work so well at that age. Check the box for the maker's stated age if you're buying for a younger child.

Can you play with fewer cards?
Absolutely, and it's the right move with little ones. Start with eight or ten pairs and build up as they get better. It also makes a quicker game when you've only got ten minutes.

How many people can play?
Two to four works best. One child can also play it solo, turning it into a puzzle rather than a competition.

Is it good for the caravan?
One of the better ones. The box is compact, the game needs nothing but a flat surface, and there's no reading or setup involved. It comes out at a camp table as easily as on a lounge room floor.

What's actually on the cards?
Australian icons, including koalas, magpies, crocodiles and thongs, with plenty more besides. They're illustrated rather than photographed, so each one has real personality and they're easy for a child to tell apart.

Will the cards survive being played with daily?
They're thick card rather than thin playing-card stock, which is exactly what you want at this age. They turn easily in small hands without the corners bending.

🌟 Adventure Awaits Tip
