Product Info (That's Actually Helpful)...

The rules say to ask things like "is your dog wearing a collar". The rules are being far too polite about this.

The real game starts when somebody asks "would you be friends with your dog's owner?" and everyone at the table has to agree on an answer. Then "does your dog look like it has opinions?" Then "is your dog friendly?", which sounds simple until you're staring at a watercolour terrier in a party hat trying to make a call. You will learn things about your family this way, and not all of them will be comfortable.

Underneath the chaos it's a straightforward guessing game. You each pick a dog, you take turns asking yes or no questions, and you fold down the ones that don't match until you're confident enough to name your opponent's. Two players, quick rounds, and the rules take about thirty seconds to explain.

What lifts it well above a standard guessing game is the artwork. Every dog is an ink and watercolour illustration by Emma Morgan, a designer based on the Mornington Peninsula, and each one has real character. That's what makes the subjective questions work, because you're reading a personality rather than ticking off features.

When we saw this at Gift Fair we were genuinely impressed with the artwork, and it was a no brainer for all the pet lovers out there. Some things just belong in our shop.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play?
Each player picks a dog in secret. You take turns asking yes or no questions and folding down the dogs that don't fit, until you're confident enough to name your opponent's. First to guess correctly wins. It takes about thirty seconds to teach.

What are the best questions to ask?
The physical ones get you there faster, but the subjective ones are far more fun. "Would you be friends with your dog's owner?" and "does your dog look like it would steal food?" turn a quick game into an argument worth having.

How many players?
Two, with a tray each. Works beautifully for couples, siblings, or a grandparent and a grandchild at the kitchen table.

What age is it suitable for?
Anyone old enough to ask and answer a yes or no question, so roughly school age and up. The subjective questions land better with older kids and adults, but younger ones have a perfectly good time with "is your dog wearing a hat".

Is there a cat version?
There is. Guess the Feline is the same game with cats, illustrated in the same style. If you're buying for someone firmly in one camp, pick accordingly. If the household is divided, two sets settles it for good.

Who did the artwork?
Emma Morgan, an illustrator and designer based on the Mornington Peninsula who specialises in ink and watercolour animals and flowers. The artwork is genuinely the reason this stands apart from other guessing games.

Is it a good gift?
One of the easiest we stock for a dog person. It's funny, it's quick to learn, it looks lovely on a shelf, and it actually gets played rather than opened once and shelved.

🌟 Adventure Awaits Tip

Ban the obvious questions after the first round. Once "is it wearing a hat" is off the table, people have to get creative, and that's when the game becomes properly funny. Have a browse through our full Family Games collection for more.
