Scratch & Sniff Smell Book | In The Garden

Most books ask a child to look and listen. This one asks them to use their nose, which is a sense that almost never gets a turn.

The story takes you into the garden to gather ingredients for a special meal, and along the way there are seven different things to smell. Lift a flap, find the scratch patch underneath, give it a good scratch, and take a sniff. Each one is a different garden scent, and working out what it is before you're told is the best part of the whole thing.

That combination of flap and scratch is what makes it work for small children. There's something to do on every page, so a child who normally loses interest two spreads in stays with it right to the end. It turns reading from something that happens to them into something they're doing.

It's a proper board book too, so it handles the sort of handling a toddler gives a book. Chunky pages, flaps built to survive a bit of enthusiasm, and a size at 22cm by 17cm that sits comfortably on a lap or in two small hands.

Lovely as a shared bedtime read, and just as good handed over for a child to explore on their own.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What are the seven smells?
Garden-inspired scents that follow the ingredients being gathered in the story. We won't give them all away, because guessing before you scratch is half the fun and the reason children come back to it.

How long do the scents last?
They're strongest on the first few goes and soften gradually with use, which is true of every scratch and sniff book. Scratch firmly with a fingernail rather than rubbing with a fingertip and you'll get a great deal more out of them.

What age is it for?
It suits toddlers and preschoolers. Younger children love the flaps and the smells while an adult reads, and older preschoolers start following the story and guessing the scents on their own. Check the back cover for the publisher's stated age before giving it to a very young child.

Will the flaps survive a toddler?
They're built for the age group, so they hold up far better than the flimsy paper flaps you get in some picture books. As with any flap book, a determined toddler will eventually win, but this one puts up a decent fight.

Is there an actual story, or is it just smells?
There's a proper storyline running through it. The characters are gathering ingredients to make a special meal, and the smells belong to what they find along the way, so it reads as a book rather than a collection of scratch patches.

Is it good for a child who won't sit still?
It's one of the better options. Having something to lift and scratch on every page gives a restless child a reason to stay with the book, and plenty of parents find these are the ones that finally land.

🌟 Adventure Awaits Tip

Slow this one down and read it together. Let them guess each scent before they scratch, and storytime turns into a game. It takes twice as long and they enjoy it four times as much.
