Speedy Monkey | Ice Cream Magnetic Maze

Everything is sealed under the acrylic. Nothing comes out, nothing gets lost, and nothing ends up in anyone's mouth.

That's the quiet genius of a magnetic maze, and it's why this one works at eighteen months when most counting toys with loose pieces simply don't. The beads live inside, the wand is attached to the board, and the whole thing can be handed over in a car, a waiting room or a café without a single piece disappearing under a seat.

The game itself is lovely. Five ice cream cones across the top of the van, numbered one to five, each with its own colour. The beads sit along the bottom, and the job is to drag them up through the maze with the magnetic wand and deliver the right number of scoops to the right cone. Count out three for cone three. Match the greens to the green one. There's no single way to play it.

Underneath the ice cream shop there's a lot going on. Steering a bead with a wand takes real control of the wrist and fingers, which is exactly the groundwork for holding a pencil later. Then there's counting, colour matching and the patience to finish what you started. None of it feels like learning because the whole time they think they're running an ice cream van.

It's made from child-safe wood with non-toxic water-based paints and a durable acrylic cover, so it stands up to being carried about, dropped and played with daily.

Speedy Monkey wooden toys have become a real favourite for us in the shop. Beautifully made, genuinely good design, and the sort of thing that gets picked up by everyone who walks past the display.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Can the beads come out?
No, they're sealed under the acrylic cover. That's the main reason this suits a younger child and why it's such a good travel toy. Nothing to lose and nothing to swallow.

Is the wand attached?
Yes, it's on a cord attached to the board, so it stays with the toy rather than vanishing. On a magnetic maze that's the difference between a toy that works and a toy that's useless.

Is 18 months too young for counting?
Not at all, because the counting isn't the point at that age. An 18 month old enjoys dragging the beads and watching them move, and that alone builds real hand control. The numbers and colour matching come into their own somewhere between two and three, so it's a toy they grow into.

How does it help with pencil grip?
Steering a bead through a maze with a wand takes fine control of the fingers and wrist, which is the same control writing needs. It's one of the better bits of pre-writing practice available, and no child has ever noticed they were doing it.

Is it good for the car?
One of the best things we stock for it. It's slim, light, completely silent, and nothing can fall out. Hand it over at the start of a long drive and you'll get a decent stretch of quiet.

How do I clean it?
A damp cloth over the surface. Don't put it in water or use anything harsh, since that's what damages the paint and the acrylic over time.

Can two children play at once?
There's one wand, so it's really a one-child toy. If you've got two, a second board is the easier solution than negotiating turns.

🌟 Adventure Awaits Tip

Keep this one in the nappy bag or the car rather than the toy box. A silent toy with no loose pieces is worth its weight in a café or a waiting room, and it stays far more interesting if it only appears when you're out. Have a browse through the full Speedy Monkey range for more.
