Of all the games we stock, this is the one that belongs in a caravan drawer most.

Tinderblox is a campfire building competition that fits in a tin the size of a deck of cards. You take turns drawing a card and placing a log or a cinder onto the fire using a pair of tweezers, one careful piece at a time. The fire grows, the stack gets less stable, and at some point somebody's hand wobbles and the whole thing goes over. Loudly. Usually to a great deal of commentary from everyone else at the table.

It's a light game and that's the point. Ages 6 and up, three to fifteen minutes a round, and the rules take about a minute to explain. There's no reading, no strategy to master and no advantage to being the oldest person at the table, which is exactly why it works with mixed ages. A six year old with steady hands will beat their dad, and will remind him about it for the rest of the trip.

The tin is what makes it. It lives in the glovebox, the camp box, the handbag or the tent pocket without taking up any real space, and it comes out at the campsite table after dinner, on rainy afternoons in the van, or in the twenty minutes before dinner is ready. Playing a campfire game beside an actual campfire is a small pleasure, but it's a real one.

If you like this one, have a look at Barbecubes, the follow-up in the same series with a barbecue theme, tongs instead of tweezers and a slightly older age rating.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Should I get Tinderblox or Barbecubes?
Tinderblox is the original and the gentler of the two. It's rated 6 and up, uses tweezers, and the campfire theme suits camping and caravan families perfectly. Barbecubes is the sequel, rated 8 and up, uses tongs and adds action cards that ramp up the difficulty. If you're buying for younger kids or a mixed-age group, start with Tinderblox. If it's mostly adults or older kids, Barbecubes has a bit more bite. Plenty of people end up with both, since they play differently enough to justify it.

Is it too fiddly for a 6 year old?
Six is a fair starting age and the tweezers are easier to handle than they look. Steady hands matter more than experience here, which is why kids often do better than adults. If you've got someone younger who wants in, let them place a piece with a hand from an adult and they'll be fine.

Does everything pack back into the tin?
It does, and it's designed to. That's what makes it a genuine travel game rather than something you have to wrestle shut. Count the logs and cinders before the lid goes on and you'll never lose a piece.

Do you need to read to play?
No, and it's one of the quiet strengths of this game. The cards are picture-based, so pre-readers and early readers can play on completely equal terms with everyone else.

Is it fun for adults too?
It is, particularly with a group. The tension of adding one more log while five people watch is the whole game, and it holds up just as well at a pub table as it does at a campsite.

How small is the tin, really?
Mini tin format, roughly the footprint of a deck of cards. It fits in a glovebox, a handbag, a tent pocket or the door of a camp fridge without you noticing it's there.

🌟 Adventure Awaits Tip
