Product Info (That's Actually Helpful)...

Backgammon has been played for about five thousand years, which means somebody worked out how good it was a very long time ago and nothing has improved on it since.

This is the travel version, and the design is genuinely clever. The board rolls up and fastens with two press studs, and everything you need lives in a zipped compartment inside, so there are no loose pieces rolling around a bag and nothing to lose. Unroll it on a camp table, a tray table or a pub table and you're playing within seconds.

Open it measures 36 by 24cm, which is a proper playing surface rather than a miniature one. Rolled, it's slim enough for a glovebox, a caravan drawer or a suitcase. The box it comes in isn't wasted either: the base doubles as a dice cup.

It's made from faux leather in deep purple with mustard trim, and the stitching is properly done. It looks like something you'd be pleased to pull out, which matters more than it should on a travel game. Most of them look like an afterthought.

The game itself is two players, a mix of skill and the luck of the dice, and it suits anyone from about eight to eighty. Quick enough for one round over a coffee, absorbing enough to lose an evening to.

This is the one that did it for us. At Gift Fair Adele fell completely in love with this set, backgammon being her favourite game, and that was the moment we decided to bring Journey of Something into the shop.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How big is it when it's rolled up?
Slim enough for a glovebox, a caravan drawer or a suitcase pocket. The board opens to 36 by 24cm, which is a genuine playing surface rather than a cramped travel miniature.

Where do the pieces go?
Into a zipped compartment inside the board itself. That's the clever part. Everything travels inside the thing you're rolling up, so there's no separate bag to lose and no pieces escaping into a backpack.

Is it hard to learn?
Not at all. You can pick up the basics in about ten minutes and spend years getting good at it, which is the mark of a game worth owning. It's part skill, part luck of the dice, so a beginner can still beat someone experienced.

What's the doubling dice for?
It's used to raise the stakes mid-game. One player offers to double the value of the round, and the other either accepts or forfeits. It adds a layer of bluff and judgement on top of the dice, and it's worth learning once you've got the basics down.

Is it real leather?
Faux leather, with quality stitching throughout. It gives you the look and the feel without the price, and it handles being rolled and unrolled repeatedly far better than you'd expect.

What age is it suitable for?
Anyone from about eight upwards can play, and it's one of the better games for a grandparent and a grandchild because the dice level the field. Not for small children, given the small tokens.

Is it a good gift?
One of our favourites. It suits someone who already plays and someone who's always meant to learn, it looks lovely out of the wrapping, and unlike most travel games it genuinely travels.

🌟 Adventure Awaits Tip

Keep this one in the van rather than the cupboard. A game that rolls up with all its pieces inside is the one that actually gets played, usually at a camp table after dinner with a drink in hand. Have a browse through our full Travel Games collection for more.
