Wine Escape Room Game

You put a bottle of wine in a cage, lock it, and the only way to get it back is to solve the puzzle. That's the game, and it is a genuinely inspired piece of motivation.

The story goes like this. Your distant relative, great uncle Earl Lochkeye, has died and left you a considerable fortune. Unfortunately, some bitter relations want it for themselves and are prepared to use any method to get it, poisoning very much included. The antidote is locked away, and you've got four rooms of his crumbling manor to work through to find it.

Each room, the library, the study, the atrium and the servant quarters, has its own start card and a set of problem cards full of questions and riddles. Answer them, write your results on the score sheet, and the numbers eventually reduce down to a single four-digit combination. Get it right and the padlock opens. Get it wrong and you're still thirsty.

It's cooperative, so everyone works on it together rather than competing, which makes it a very good dinner party game. Everyone crowded round a score sheet arguing about a riddle, with a bottle sitting just out of reach behind bars, is a better evening than most board games manage.

We love the Beer and Whiskey version so much that we just had to bring in the Wine one. Same idea, different drink, and this is the one for the crowd who'd rather be waiting on a red.

Does it come with wine?
No, you supply your own bottle, which also means you get to pick something worth earning. The cage takes a standard wine bottle.

How does it actually work?
Put your bottle in the cage and lock it with the combination padlock. Work through the four rooms, answering the questions and riddles on the problem cards. Write your answers on the score sheet, add the numbers as instructed, and you'll arrive at a four-digit code. That code opens the lock.

How many people can play?
It's cooperative rather than competitive, so anywhere from two people up to a table full. Four or five is about the sweet spot, enough brains on the riddles without anyone being left out of it.

How long does it take?
Depends entirely on your group and how much wine was consumed beforehand. Most people take an evening's worth of solving, which is rather the point of a dinner party game.

Is it reusable?
The answers stay the same once you've solved them, so it's a one-time puzzle for the group that plays it. That makes it a brilliant thing to pass on to friends afterwards, which plenty of people do.

What if we can't work it out?
Then the wine stays where it is and you'll have to open something else. Honestly, that's half the comedy of it.

How does it compare to the Beer and Whiskey version?
